The Heian period was a very important time in Japanese history. It lasted from the year 794 until 1185. This era is known as the peak of the imperial court. During these years, Japanese art and literature reached a high point. It was a time when the country's own culture began to mature.

This period followed the Nara period in Japan. It changed how the country was ruled and how people lived.

Everything changed when the 50th emperor, Emperor Kammu, moved the capital. He moved the seat of government to Heian-kyō, which is modern Kyoto. He wanted to strengthen his power and find a better location. The new capital was modeled after the Chinese city of Chang'an. It was even larger than the old capital in Nara.

This move helped the government stay strong for a while. The city had good river access to the sea.

As time passed, Japan began to look less toward China. In 838, the official missions to Tang China ended. This allowed a unique Japanese culture to grow on its own. Two new ways of writing appeared called katakana and hiragana. These were phonetic scripts, meaning they represented sounds.

Because of these scripts, many court women wrote famous books. They wrote beautiful stories like The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu. They also wrote The Pillow Book by Sei Shōnagon.

While emperors were the leaders, one family held the real power. This was the Fujiwara clan, a very strong group of nobles. They married their daughters into the imperial family to stay in control. By the year 1000, Fujiwara no Michinaga was very powerful. He could even choose which person would be the next emperor.

This family acted like hereditary dictators at the court. They managed the state through their own private offices.

Eventually, the central government began to lose its grip on the land. Large private estates called shōen grew across the country. These lands became hard for the government to tax or control. Because the government could not police everything, a new warrior class rose up. These professional warriors eventually took control of the country. In 1185, Minamoto no Yoritomo established the Kamakura shogunate. This event marked the end of the Heian period.
