The Satsuma Rebellion was a major civil war in Japan. It happened in 1877 during the Meiji era. This was a time when Japan was changing very fast. The new government wanted to modernize the whole country. This meant the old ways of life were ending. One group of people felt very left out by these changes. These were the samurai, who were the traditional military nobles.

The conflict started because of many different reasons. The government took away the special status of the samurai. They also stopped giving them money for their service. Many samurai felt the new culture was a betrayal. A famous leader named Saigō Takamori lived in the Satsuma domain. He had started many private academies to train men. These schools taught both books and weapons training.

Things became tense in late 1876 and early 1877. The government sent men to investigate unrest in Satsuma. These men were captured and said they were spies. This made the local samurai believe Saigō was in danger. The government also sent a ship to take weapons away. In response, students from Saigō's school attacked an arsenal. They took back many weapons to use in battle.

Saigō eventually led his army north toward Tokyo. His forces included about 12,000 infantrymen in different battalions. They faced the new Imperial Japanese Army. The government used many soldiers, including 45,920 infantrymen. They also had 1,500 engineers and many artillery guns. A big fight happened at Kumamoto Castle in February. The samurai tried to starve the soldiers inside.

The rebellion lasted until September 24, 1877. The government forces finally crushed the revolt. Saigō Takamori was shot and died during the fighting. This war was very expensive for the Japanese government. It even forced them to change how they used money. Most importantly, it ended the age of the samurai. From then on, regular people served in the army.
