Hon'inbō Sansa was a legendary Go player from Japan. Go is a deep and strategic board game. Sansa was also a very skilled player of Shogi. Shogi is another famous game from Japan. He was a Buddhist monk of the Nichiren sect. His original name was Nikkai. He lived in a temple in Kyōto. The name "Hon'inbō" came from the Jakkōji temple complex.

Sansa's life was full of important roles. He became a monk when he was only nine years old. Later, he became the first Go-dokoro. This was an official position for a Go master. As a Go-dokoro, he received fifty koku of rice. He also had five servants to help him. He was a very respected leader in the world of games.

Many powerful leaders in Japan studied with Sansa. These men were the great unifiers of the country. They were named Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Nobunaga named Sansa the first Meijin of Go in 1578. A Meijin is a title for a top master. Hideyoshi gave Sansa an official job in 1587. He even gave Sansa's temple rice every year.

Sansa's school changed the history of Go. He founded the House of Hon'inbō. This was the first of four great Go schools. This school was very successful for a long time. Seven of the ten historic Meijin came from his house. Even the three Kisei, or Go Sages, were Hon'inbō masters. The school lasted until the 20th century.

Sansa had a busy life of travel and skill. Every year, he traveled east to the city of Edo. He went there for special matches called Castle Go. These matches were held in the presence of leaders. Sansa was a very busy man in his later years. He died in Edo when he was 65 years old. His story lives on in things like the manga Hikaru no Go.
