Despite these hard things, Shingen became very strong. People called him the "Tiger of Kai." He was known for being a great military leader. His skills were as high as other great leaders like Mōri Motonari.

Shingen grew up as the eldest son of Takeda Nobutora. He was a talented poet when he was young.

At age 15, he helped his father win the Battle of Un no Kuchi. Later, Shingen took control of the clan himself. This happened in 1540. He did this because he thought his father would choose his brother to be the next leader. After he took power, Shingen began to win many battles. He worked hard to grow his land and make it safer.

Shingen spent many years fighting to gain new territory. He first moved into Shinano Province. He won many battles there, like the Siege of Uehara.

He also captured many castles, such as Nagakubo Castle in 1543. Shingen also fought a very famous rival named Uesugi Kenshin. They fought each other five times at the Battles of Kawanakajima. One famous story says Kenshin even fought Shingen one-on-one. In this story, Kenshin used a sword while Shingen used an iron war fan.

As Shingen grew older, he faced even bigger challenges. He made alliances with leaders like Hōjō Ujiyasu and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

He even planned to move toward the city of Kyoto. In 1572, Shingen led a huge force of over 30,000 men. He fought a famous battle at Mikatagahara. This battle showed how well he could lead soldiers on horseback. Shingen used cavalry, which are soldiers on horses, to win his fights. He was one of the only leaders strong enough to challenge Oda Nobunaga.

Shingen's life came to an end in 1573. He was 51 years old when he died.

He was besieging Noda Castle when he passed away. No one knows the exact reason why he died. Some people thought he had pneumonia. Others thought an old war wound or a sniper caused it. Today, people still remember him as a great leader. You can even see a statue of him in Kōfu.
