Hon'inbō Sansa was a famous Go player from Japan. Go is a board game. Sansa was also good at Shogi. Shogi is another game from Japan. He was a Buddhist monk. He lived in a temple in Kyōto. His name Hon'inbō came from that temple.

Many great leaders played Go with Sansa. They were the men who united Japan. One leader named Sansa a Meijin. A Meijin is a top master. Other leaders gave him rice as a gift. They also gave him servants to help him. Sansa started a school for Go. We call this school the House of Hon'inbō. It was one of four great schools. This school lasted for hundreds of years. Seven of the ten great Meijin came from his school. This shows how strong his school was. Sansa had to travel to Edo every year. He went there for special matches called Castle Go. These matches were very important. Sansa died in Edo when he was 65 years old.
