Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a powerful samurai and daimyō who lived during the late Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods.

He is regarded as the second "Great Unifier" of Japan. This means he played a major role in bringing the country together under one central rule. Hideyoshi was unique because he rose from a peasant background to become the most powerful man in the nation.

He earned the rank of kampaku, which is an Imperial Regent. He was the first person in history to hold this high noble position without being born into a noble family. His life represents a massive shift in the social structure of feudal Japan.

Hideyoshi's early life was very difficult.

He was born around 1537 in Nakamura, Owari Province. His father, Kinoshita Yaemon, was an ashigaru, which is a peasant employed as a foot soldier. Because his father died when Hideyoshi was only seven, he grew up in poverty. Some historical writings even note that he had to beg on the streets. He had no surname during his childhood and went by the name Kinoshita Tōkichirō. He eventually left a life of temple study to seek adventure and service under powerful lords.

His rise to power began through his service to the ambitious lord Oda Nobunaga.

Hideyoshi joined the Oda clan in 1558 as an ashigaru. He quickly distinguished himself by becoming Nobunaga's sandal-bearer, a position of high status. He proved himself to be a capable administrator and a clever negotiator. In 1564, he used bribes to convince several warlords to switch sides. By 1568, he was one of Nobunaga's most distinguished generals. He eventually took the name Hashiba Hideyoshi to reflect his growing importance within the clan.

A turning point occurred in 1582 during the Honnō-ji Incident.

During this event, Oda Nobunaga was assassinated by Akechi Mitsuhide. Hideyoshi moved quickly to avenge his lord. He defeated the assassin at the Battle of Yamazaki. This victory allowed Hideyoshi to claim authority for himself. He then began a series of military campaigns to complete the unification of Japan. He conquered Shikoku in 1585 and Kyūshū in 1587. He finished the unification process by winning the Siege of Odawara in 1590.

To solidify his status, Hideyoshi sought high titles from the Imperial Court.

In 1585, he was formally given the clan name Toyotomi. He also became the daijō-daijin, or Chancellor. As a kampaku, he acted as a regent for the Emperor. He built grand structures to show his wealth, such as the Jurakudai palace. He also began the construction of Osaka Castle, which would become a major stronghold.

His rule defined the Azuchi-Momoyama period, a time named partly after his own Momoyama Castle.

Hideyoshi's leadership involved complex political struggles with other powerful leaders.

He fought a conflict with the daimyō Shibata Katsuie at the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583. He also faced a stalemate against Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute. While they did not fight in person, the tension between them was high. Eventually, Hideyoshi and Ieyasu reached a peace agreement. However, Ieyasu refused to become Hideyoshi's vassal. After Hideyoshi died in 1598, his son Hideyori was eventually displaced by Ieyasu. This led to the start of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Hideyoshi left a lasting legacy through many social and physical changes.

He implemented the "sword hunt," which restricted the possession of weapons to the samurai class. He also helped build and restore many temples in Kyoto. His administration significantly increased the production of firearms at the Kunitomo factory. Even though his direct rule ended, his influence shaped the Tokugawa class system. The structures he built and the social rules he established remained important parts of Japanese history for many years.
