He was part of the Minamoto family. This family lived in the Ashikaga area.

Takauji was a great general. In 1333, he was sent to Kyoto. At first, he worked for the Kamakura shogunate. This was a group of military leaders. Later, he changed sides to join Emperor Go-Daigo. This choice helped him gain much power.

Because he betrayed his old masters, some people called him a villain. They felt he was not loyal to the throne. However, others saw him differently. A wise man named Musō Soseki said Takauji was good. He said Takauji was calm in battle. He was also kind and gave much to others.

In 1338, Takauji became the first shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate. This began the Muromachi period in Japan. He helped set up a new Northern Court. This led to a long time with two emperors. Takauji ruled until he died in 1358.
