Long ago, warriors ruled Japan. This was the Kamakura shogunate. It lasted from 1185 to 1333.

A leader named Minamoto no Yoritomo started this rule. He won a war between two clans. He named himself shōgun, a military leader. Yoritomo ruled from the city of Kamakura. The emperor stayed in the capital city, Kyoto. The emperor was a symbolic leader but had little power.

After Yoritomo died, a family called the Hōjō took control. They acted as regents. A regent is someone who rules for another person. The Hōjō held the real power for many years. They even chose new shōguns from other families to keep things stable.

In 1274 and 1281, the Mongols tried to invade Japan. They came by sea. Both times, large storms called typhoons hit the coast. People called these storms the "kamikaze," or divine wind. The storms helped protect Japan from the invaders.

Eventually, the shogunate grew weak. It cost a lot of money to defend the land. In 1333, the rule ended. A new group called the Ashikaga took over.
