The title started a long time ago. It was first used for generals. These generals fought tribes in northern Japan. One famous general was Sakanoue no Tamuramaro.

For many years, the Emperor was the official leader. But shoguns often held the real power. They ran the country from a tent-government. This was called a bakufu.

Many different families ruled as shoguns. Some were from the Minamoto family. Others were from the Fujiwara or imperial families. One famous leader was Oda Nobunaga. He was asked to be shogun before he died.

The shogunate lasted for nearly 700 years. It ended in 1867. Tokugawa Yoshinobu gave the office back to the Emperor. This change helped start a new time for Japan.
