Kazuo Taoka was a famous leader in Japan. He led a large group called the Yamaguchi-gumi. This group is known as a yakuza group. Taoka became the boss in 1946. He stayed the boss until 1981.

Taoka grew up in a city called Kobe. He was an orphan. He was a street fighter when he was young. People called him "the Bear." This was because of how he fought.

Taoka changed how his group worked. He started a business at the docks. This business moved cargo from ships. Because of this, his group grew very big. At its peak, it had over 10,000 members. This made it the largest group of its kind in the world.

Taoka had many rivals. In 1972, he made an alliance with the Inagawa-kai group. He did this at a special ceremony at his home. In 1978, someone tried to kill him. A person from a rival gang shot him in Kyoto. Taoka survived that event.

Taoka died from a heart attack in 1981. His wife, Fumiko, led the group for a short time. Later, a new boss was chosen in 1984.
