Yasushi Akimoto is a prominent Japanese creator who influences many parts of modern entertainment. He works as a record producer, a lyricist, and a television writer. A lyricist is a person who writes the words for songs. Akimoto is most famous for creating and producing major idol groups. These groups include Onyanko Club and the massive AKB48 franchise. His impact on the music industry is enormous. The total sales for the singles he has written exceed 100 million copies. This makes him the best-selling lyricist in the history of Japan.

Akimoto's creative work follows many different paths. He produces music for a vast variety of artists and groups. His lyrics have been used by Kinki Kids, Tunnels, and Nogizaka46. He also wrote the final single for the singer Hibari Misora, titled "Kawa no Nagare no Yō ni." Beyond music, he writes stories for books and film. He created the horror franchise Chakushin Ari, also known as One Missed Call. This began as his novel before becoming a film in 2003. Hollywood later remade the story in 2008.

One of Akimoto's most significant achievements is the expansion of the AKB48 franchise. He has developed many international sister groups to share this musical style. The first international group was JKT48, which was announced in Indonesia in 2011. In 2012, he announced SNH48 in China. By 2016, SNH48 and its local sister groups, such as BEJ48 and GNZ48, became independent. This collection of groups is known as the SNH48 Group or Star48. He continued this global expansion with BNK48 in Thailand in 2017. Other groups include TPE48, MNL48, MUM48, AKB48 Team SH, and SGO48.

Akimoto also uses advanced technology to create new kinds of entertainment. In 2016, he started a multimedia project called 22/7. This project involves Aniplex and Sony Music Records. The members are voice actresses who use motion capture technology. They provide both the voices and the movements for their characters. In 2022, he became the general producer for a project called OVERSE. This project uses blockchain and metaverse concepts to create a new kind of idol group. These methods show how he connects traditional performance with digital worlds.

Throughout his career, Akimoto has held several important professional roles. He began writing for television during his high school years. He has produced many programs, including the show Utaban. In 2007, he entered the field of education. He became a professor and the vice president at Kyoto University of Art and Design. In 2014, he was named a member of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Committee. He was tasked with producing the opening ceremony alongside photographer Mika Ninagawa. However, his appointment faced some criticism from the public.

Akimoto has received many prestigious honors for his contributions to art. In 2008, he won the Grand Prix at the 41st Japan Lyricist Awards. He earned a Special Award at the 51st Japan Record Award in 2009. In 2012, he won both the Lyricist Award and a Special Award at the Japan Record Awards. He also received the Inspired Achievement award from the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2017. In 2022, the Japanese government honored him with the Medal with Purple Ribbon. These awards recognize his long history of success in music and media.

While much of his work is celebrated, Akimoto has also faced scrutiny. Some people have criticized his song lyrics for having misogynistic undertones. This means some believe the words treat women in a disrespectful way. For example, the 2016 HKT48 song "Einstein yori Dianna Agron" was seen by some as an insult to women's intelligence. Despite these criticisms, his influence remains vast. He continues to shape how music, television, and technology interact in Japan and around the world.
