A vocoder is a special tool for handling sound. Its name comes from combining the words "voice" and "encoder."

This device can analyze and change a human voice. It is used for many different jobs. Some people use it to compress audio data. This means it makes sound files smaller. It can also be used for voice encryption. Encryption is a way to keep a voice secure. This is very helpful for private radio calls.

How does this tool actually work? First, the machine analyzes a person's speech. It divides the voice into many different frequency bands. These are different ranges of sound. The machine measures the level of sound in each band. This set of measurements is called a modulator.

To make the sound again, the machine uses a carrier. A carrier is a steady sound like noise or a sawtooth wave. The modulator tells the carrier how to change in real time. The carrier passes through filters to match the original voice. This process recreates the speech patterns.

The history of the vocoder began many years ago. An engineer named Homer Dudley started this work in 1928. He worked at Bell Labs to develop these ideas. Dudley was granted patents for his work in 1939. He also showed a machine called a voder to the public. The voder was a voice operating demonstrator. It was shown at the New York World's Fair from 1939 to 1940.

This machine could actually create speech using electronic parts. It used keys and a foot pedal to work.

There are many important facts about how these machines grew. In 1943, Bell Labs engineers built the SIGSALY system. This system used vocoders for secure talk during World War II. Later, the KY-9 THESEUS voice coder was made in 1953. It was much lighter than the older SIGSALY system. By 1961, the HY-2 voice coder was released. This was a 16-channel system used for secure speech. Today, many different digital methods are used instead. One common way is called linear predictive coding. This helps modern phones and radios work well.

You might recognize the sound of a vocoder in music. It can make a singer sound like a robot.

This happens because the process can sound a bit dehumanizing. It does not recreate every tiny detail of the original wave. Instead, it only sends the main parts of the vocal model. This makes the voice sound very electronic and cool. Many bands in the 1970s used this for special effects. It is a great way to turn a voice into a musical instrument. You can hear this effect in many popular songs today.
