They formed in 1962 and became very important to music history. The band was led by two brothers named Ray and Dave Davies.

Ray played rhythm guitar and sang the lead vocals. Dave played the lead guitar and also sang. They were joined by Pete Quaife on bass and Mick Avory on drums. This group helped change how people heard rock music in the 1960s.

Making their signature sound took a bit of clever thinking. In 1964, they recorded the hit song "You Really Got Me."

Dave Davies wanted a gritty and loud guitar sound for the song. He achieved this by making a small slice in the speaker cone of his amplifier. This little green amp created a unique sound that people loved. This specific way of playing helped shape the future of hard rock music. The song reached number one in the United Kingdom and the Top 10 in the United States.

History shows the band grew from a small group of friends. The Davies brothers grew up in Muswell Hill in North London.

They played music together in their childhood home at 6 Denmark Terrace. Before they were called The Kinks, they used many different names. They were known as the Ray Davies Quartet and the Ramrods. They were also called the Pete Quaife Band and the Bo-Weevils. Eventually, they settled on the name The Kinks in 1964.

As time passed, the band's music began to change and grow. They started with American R&B and rock and roll influences. Later, they added sounds from British music hall, folk, and country music. Ray Davies wrote many songs that looked at English culture and lifestyle.

The Kinks left a huge mark on many other musicians. Famous groups like Green Day and The Jam played music inspired by them.

They finally stopped performing together in 1996. The band officially broke up in 1997 due to creative tension between the brothers.
