Ray sang and played rhythm guitar. Dave played lead guitar. They also had Pete Quaife on bass and Mick Avory on drums.

Their song "You Really Got Me" became a huge hit in 1964. It reached number one in the UK. It also hit the Top 10 in the US. Dave made a gritty guitar sound by slicing his amp.

This sound helped shape hard rock music.

The band's music changed over time. At first, they played rock and roll. Later, they used folk and country styles. Ray Davies wrote songs about English life. His lyrics told stories about people and culture. This made the band very special to many fans.

The Kinks were very successful. They sold over 50 million records worldwide. They even joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many new bands, like Green Day, were influenced by them. The brothers stayed in the band until it ended in 1997.
