Sir Harry Rodger Webb, known professionally as Cliff Richard, is a highly successful British singer and actor.
His career has spanned more than 65 years, making him one of the most enduring figures in popular music. Richard is a massive commercial success, particularly in the United Kingdom. He has sold over 21.5 million singles in the UK alone. This achievement places him as the third-top-selling artist in the history of the UK singles chart. He follows only the Beatles and Elvis Presley in this specific ranking. Globally, his impact is even larger, with total record sales exceeding 250 million units.
Richard's musical identity underwent several significant transformations throughout his long career. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was marketed as a rebellious rock and roll singer. He adopted the dress and hairstyles of Elvis Presley to fit this persona. During this era, he often performed with a rock attitude and rarely smiled at the audience. However, as he grew older, his focus shifted toward his Christian faith. This led to a softening of his musical style. He moved toward a more middle-of-the-road image and occasionally performed contemporary Christian music.
His rise to stardom involved specific musical groups and strategic name changes. He began as the lead singer for a group called the Drifters. An entrepreneur named Harry Greatorex suggested the name "Cliff" because it sounded like a "cliff face," implying "rock." The surname "Richard" was a tribute to his hero, Little Richard. Eventually, the backing group changed its name to the Shadows due to legal complications with an American group of the same name.
The Shadows were unique because they eventually became contractually separate from Richard. They even secured their own EMI recording contract to release independent music. This allowed the Shadows to achieve their own success, including five UK number one hits.
Richard's early success was defined by groundbreaking recordings in the British music scene. His 1958 hit "Move It," written by Ian Samwell, is often described as Britain's first authentic rock and roll song.
The song reached number two on the UK charts. His fifth single, "Living Doll," became his first number one hit. This song helped transition his sound into something more relaxed. He also found success in film, appearing in movies such as "Expresso Bongo" (1959) and "Summer Holiday" (1963). He even hosted his own television program on the BBC.
His statistical achievements in the music industry are nearly unmatched. Richard has achieved 14 UK number one singles. He holds a unique record as the only singer to have a number one single in the UK in five consecutive decades. Furthermore, he and Elvis Presley share the record for being the only acts to appear in the UK singles charts in all of their first six decades, from the 1950s through the 2000s.
He has also earned 67 UK top ten singles, which is the second-highest total for any artist. Additionally, more than 130 of his singles, albums, and EPs have reached the UK Top 20, a feat more than any other artist.
While Richard is a titan of the British music scene, his popularity has varied in other regions. He has not achieved the same level of stardom in the United States, despite having eight US Top 40 singles. One notable success in America was the million-selling song "Devil Woman." In Canada, he enjoyed successful periods in the early 1960s and the late 1970s. He remains a major star in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Northern Europe, and Asia.
His ability to maintain a global following across different genres and decades is a testament to his versatility.
Richard's life story also reflects significant historical movements. He was born in Lucknow, which was then part of British India, to parents Rodger Oscar Webb and Dorothy Marie Dazely.
Following the violence of Direct Action Day, his family decided to move to Britain permanently. In 1948, they traveled by sea to England. They moved from a life of comparative wealth in India to a semi-detached house in Carshalton, Surrey. This transition from colonial India to post-war Britain shaped his early years before he eventually found global fame through music and film.
