Making the music involved many talented players. The band used instruments like the electric guitar and drums.

They also used a Hammond organ, which is a keyboard instrument. Jon Lord was a very important keyboard player for the group. The band members lived and practiced together in a large house. This house was in South Mimms, Hertfordshire. It was filled with the latest musical equipment. They spent their time writing songs and rehearsing there. This helped them create their unique and heavy sound.

The band began in 1968 with a group called Roundabout.

A man named Chris Curtis wanted to build a supergroup. He worked with a businessman named Tony Edwards. The first member to join was the organ player Jon Lord. He helped bring in other musicians like guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. The group eventually chose the name Deep Purple. This name came from a song favorite of Blackmore's grandmother. They released their first album, Shades of Deep Purple, in 1968.

Deep Purple has a very long and busy history. They used labels like "Mark I" and "Mark II" to name different groups of members.
