They formed in 1965 and became very important to the music of the 1960s. The group was known for being both successful and controversial. Many people saw them as a symbol of the era's counterculture. Their music mixed many different styles like jazz, blues, and folk. This blend helped them stand out from other bands.

The band started with a meeting between Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek. They had both studied theater and film at UCLA. Morrison had been writing songs in his head. He told Manzarek that he needed to sing them. Manzarek was inspired by the spooky lyrics of the song "Moonlight Drive." Later, drummer John Densmore joined the group.

Finally, guitarist Robby Krieger joined in late 1965. The group took their name from a book by Aldous Huxley. This book was titled "The Doors of Perception."

Performing live helped the band grow and find their sound. They played at a club called London Fog in 1966. This helped the singer, Jim Morrison, gain confidence. They also became the house band at the Whisky a Go Go.

In August 1966, the president of Elektra Records saw them play. This led to the band signing a record deal. They soon began recording their first studio albums. Their debut album, titled "The Doors," came out in early 1967.

The band had many big moments on television and the charts. Their song "Light My Fire" was a massive hit. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

They even appeared on the famous Ed Sullivan Show in 1967. During that show, they sang "Light My Fire" exactly as written. This caused some trouble with the show's producers. The band also used new tools like the Moog synthesizer. This helped them create unique sounds on their album "Strange Days."

Even today, the legacy of The Doors remains very strong. They have sold over 100 million records around the world.

In the United States, they have sold 36 million albums. They were the first American band to earn eight Gold and Platinum LPs in a row. Magazines like Rolling Stone have listed them among the greatest artists ever.
