Making their music involved a lot of hard work and skill. Courtney Love sang and played guitar for the group. Eric Erlandson was also a guitarist for the band. They worked in rehearsal spaces in Hollywood to practice. In the early days, Love worked to pay for their equipment. The band used different musicians to fill out their sound. They had several drummers, like Patty Schemel. They also had different bass players, such as Kristen Pfaff and Melissa Auf der Maur.

The band started in the summer of 1989. It began after Eric Erlandson saw an ad in a paper. The ad was placed by Courtney Love. They met at a coffee shop to talk about music. Their first official show was in October 1989 at a bar called Raji's. Their first album, Pretty on the Inside, came out in 1991. This album was produced by Kim Gordon of the band Sonic Youth. It was very loud and used a lot of noise and feedback.

This album became very popular and reached platinum status quickly. Their third album was called Celebrity Skin in 1998. This album had a different sound and sold about 2 million copies. The band later reformed in 2010 to release Nobody's Daughter. They were even nominated for four Grammy Awards during their career.

Many things in the music world connect back to Hole. They helped bring new attention to female singers in rock. Their songs often dealt with difficult and serious life themes. This helped them stand out to music and feminist scholars. In the United States, they sold over three million records. Even after they stopped performing as a group in 2002, their impact remained. Courtney Love eventually began touring as a solo artist in 2013. Their history shows how much a band can change the music scene.
