The group started in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1989. At first, they used the name Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids. The band is famous for its theatrical and shocking live shows. They often wore wild costumes and used heavy makeup to look strange. Their music and performances were meant to be very visual. This style made them stand out in the rock music world. They wanted to push boundaries and make people think.

To create their unique look, the band used special stage names. For many years, members combined a famous woman's name with a male killer's name. This was a way to show the balance of good and evil. For example, the lead singer's name comes from Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. This idea showed that every person has both light and dark sides.

The band also used images from old children's TV shows. They would change these images to make them look spooky or strange. This mix of childhood things and dark themes was part of their art.

In 1993, the band signed with the Nothing Records label. This label was started by the musician Trent Reznor.

The band recorded their first major album, Portrait of an American Family, in 1994. This was a difficult time because the first version of the album was not good. They had to re-record much of it in Los Angeles. During this era, the band members changed quite often. One member, Gidget Gein, left the group and was replaced by Twiggy Ramirez. These changes helped shape the sound that fans would soon recognize.

The band reached huge success with their second album, Antichrist Superstar, in 1996.

This album sold 132,000 copies in its very first week. It was the start of a three-album series called a triptych. Following this, they released Mechanical Animals in 1998. This album sounded different because it was influenced by 1970s glam rock. The band became very famous all over the world during these years. They toured constantly to show their music to new audiences.

Even with fame, the band faced many hard times and arguments. Some leaders in the United States tried to stop them from performing. They even passed laws in three states to block the band from certain venues. In 1999, the media wrongly blamed the band for a school tragedy. Despite these struggles, the band's impact on music remained very strong. They have sold over 50 million records across the globe. They were also inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000.
