Industrial music

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Industrial music is a unique style of experimental music. It often reflects a post-industrial society. This means the music is inspired by the modern world of machines and technology.

Many artists use unconventional themes in their lyrics. They often reject the standard rules of rock music. Some early groups even called their work "anti-music." This style was a response to a changing world. In this age, information and technology became primary tools of power. Musicians wanted to create something for a brand new generation.

Creating this music involves many interesting steps and tools. Artists often use tape editing and distorted vocal effects. They might use loops to repeat specific sounds.

Many musicians build their own homemade instruments. For example, Chris Carter of Throbbing Gristle invented a device called the "Gristle-izer." This tool used a keyboard and cassette machines to play pre-recorded sounds. Other artists custom-built special boxes to change how a guitar sounds. Some players even use a slide on a guitar to create smooth, sliding notes. They might also pound on strings like a drum.

Long before the modern genre began, many people explored these sounds. In 1913, Luigi Russolo wrote a book called "The Art of Noises." He wanted music to reflect the sounds of a modern society.

Later, Ferde Grofé used instruments like locomotive bells and pneumatic drills. In 1924, George Antheil created "Ballet Mécanique" using airplane propellers and electric bells. Even the Beatles used experimental sounds in their song "Revolution 9." Many of these early ideas helped build the foundation for industrial music. These pioneers showed that any sound could be used creatively.

There are many important names and dates in this history. The term "industrial music" was used as early as 1942. However, Monte Cazazza coined the specific term in 1976.

The band Throbbing Gristle helped start the Industrial Records label. Other early groups included Cabaret Voltaire and NON. By the late 1970s, more artists like Einstürzende Neubauten emerged. In the 1980s, the music split into many different styles. These included industrial rock, industrial metal, and even industrial techno. Some of these groups, like Nine Inch Nails, became very famous in the 1990s.

Industrial music connects many different types of art and culture. It draws ideas from modernist literature, philosophy, and art.

The writings of William S. Burroughs were a big inspiration for many. He used a "cut-up" technique to disrupt how people see things. This idea helped groups like SPK experiment with new sounds. The music can be very loud and aggressive. It can even use very low sounds that make your body feel the vibrations. This connection between sound, technology, and society makes industrial music a very deep subject to study.
