Industrial music

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Industrial music is a special kind of art. It uses sounds that mimic machines and factories.

Long ago, Luigi Russolo wanted to reflect modern life. He wrote a book called The Art of Noises. He wanted music to sound like the world around us.

Early artists used very strange tools. Some used airplane motors or sirens. Others used tools like drills and bells. Musicians often make their own gear. One group used a device called a Gristle-izer. It used tape machines to play sounds.

Other players used homemade speakers or special boxes for guitars.

This music can be very loud. It can even make your body feel the sound. Some groups use bright lights during shows. Early bands like Throbbing Gristle were very bold. They wanted to make music for a new age.
