It was a way for many different cultures to meet. People from different backgrounds danced together at raves. For many, it was a way to express their feelings. It helped bring people together through a shared beat. Some say it was like England's own version of hip-hop.

How does jungle sound? It uses very fast drum beats called breakbeats. These beats are often layered in complex ways. The music also has very deep basslines that you can feel. Producers use a tool called sampling to make new songs. They take sounds from jazz, funk, or reggae recordings. A very famous sample is called the "Amen break." They also add synthesized effects and vocal samples.

This makes the music feel very full and energetic.

Jungle began to change in the early 1990s. Before this, there was a style called breakbeat hardcore. Around 1992 and 1993, the music started to shift. A track called "We Are I.E." by Lennie De Ice helped start this. It used a special bassline known as a ragga bassline. People started using names like "jungle techno" to describe it. Many DJs played this music in clubs like AWOL or Roast. Pirate radio stations like Kool FM helped the music spread quickly.

There are many different styles of jungle to explore. Ragga jungle is a popular kind that uses reggae sounds. It was very big in 1994 and 1995. One famous song is "Incredible" by M-Beat featuring General Levy. Another style is called jump-up, which focuses on the bassline. There is also ambient jungle, which is more calm.

LTJ Bukem is a famous artist in this style. He used more melodic sounds instead of just fast beats.

Jungle music eventually led to a new style called drum and bass. By the late 1990s, the sound began to change again. Artists like Dillinja and Roni Size helped move the sound forward. Some people in the 1990s thought the music was too dark. They even made documentaries to show the true side of the scene. Even though it changed, the spirit of jungle lives on. Many artists still make these tracks in their homes today.
