The Doors were a highly influential American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965.

The group consisted of vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. They became a defining symbol of the 1960s counterculture movement. This era was marked by new social ideas and musical experimentation. The band was famous for its success and its many controversies. Their music blended diverse styles, including jazz, rock, blues, and folk music. This combination created a unique sound that resonated with millions of listeners worldwide.

The band's origin began with a chance meeting on Venice Beach in July 1965. Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek were acquaintances who had both attended the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Morrison had been composing songs in his mind and felt a need to sing them. When he shared the "cool and spooky" lyrics of "Moonlight Drive" with Manzarek, the keyboardist felt inspired to create musical accompaniment.

John Densmore joined the group in August 1965 after knowing Manzarek from meditation classes. Robby Krieger joined the lineup in late 1965 after Manzarek's brothers left the group. The band chose their name from the book *The Doors of Perception* by Aldous Huxley. This title was itself a reference to a quote by the poet William Blake regarding the cleansing of the doors of perception.

Early live performances were essential for the band to develop their musical identity. From February to May 1966, they held a residency at the London Fog club in Los Angeles. This period helped Morrison build confidence as a performer. It also allowed the band to lengthen and refine songs like "The End" and "Light My Fire."

They later became the house band at the Whisky a Go Go starting in May 1966. On August 10, 1966, Elektra Records president Jac Holzman saw them perform at the Whisky. Following two sets, the band signed with the label on August 18, 1966. This began a productive partnership with producer Paul A. Rothchild and engineer Bruce Botnick.

The band's recording career produced several landmark studio albums. Their self-titled debut, *The Doors*, was released in early 1967 and featured the twelve-minute musical drama "The End." Their second album, *Strange Days*, was recorded in Los Angeles and featured the use of the Moog synthesizer. This new technology allowed the band to experiment with different electronic sounds.

While *Strange Days* had middling commercial success, it reached number three on the Billboard album chart. During this era, the band also began using studio musicians for bass parts. Manzarek noted that while his keyboard bass worked well for live shows, it lacked the articulation required for studio recordings. Musicians like Douglas Lubahn provided this necessary bass work.

Television appearances brought the band massive fame but also significant tension. Their single "Light My Fire" became the first Elektra Records song to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

In September 1967, they performed on *The Ed Sullivan Show*. Network executives had asked the band to change the word "higher" to avoid references to drug use. The band performed the song in its original form regardless. As a result, the show's host, Ed Sullivan, canceled their remaining scheduled appearances. Despite this, Morrison famously remarked on the significance of having performed on the show.

The band's history was also marked by legal and personal challenges. In December 1967, Morrison was arrested onstage during a concert at the New Haven Arena in Connecticut. This made him the first rock artist to be arrested during a live performance.

Morrison died in uncertain circumstances in 1971. Following his death, the remaining three members continued as a trio and released two more albums. They eventually disbanded in 1973. The group later reformed for the 1978 album *An American Prayer*, which used Morrison's recorded poetry from 1969 and 1970.

The Doors remain one of the best-selling musical acts in history. They were the first American band to earn eight consecutive RIAA-certified Gold and Platinum LPs.

Globally, the band has sold over 100 million records. In the United States alone, they have sold 36 million albums. Their massive impact is reflected in cultural recognitions, such as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. *Rolling Stone* magazine ranked them 41st on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."

Their legacy continues through various reunions and commemorative projects.
