They are recognized as a leading progressive rock band. The group is famous for extended musical compositions and sonic experiments. They also used philosophical lyrics and elaborate live performances to engage audiences. Their work helped define the psychedelic music scene in the late 1960s. Today, they are one of the best-selling music artists in history. They have sold more than 250 million records worldwide.

The band's musical approach involves complex layers and conceptual themes. In their early years, they used rudimentary light shows. These shows featured colored slides and domestic lights to create a psychedelic atmosphere.

As they evolved, they moved toward concept albums. These are albums where the songs follow a single theme or story. For example, Roger Waters became the primary lyricist and thematic leader in the early 1970s. He devised the concepts for their most successful studio albums. This included "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall."

The band's history is marked by several distinct eras and membership changes. The group formed in 1965 with Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright.

Barrett was the main songwriter during the early years. He led the band through their debut album, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn." However, Barrett left in 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. David Gilmour joined the band at the end of 1967. Later, personal tensions caused Richard Wright to leave in 1981. Roger Waters followed him in 1985. Eventually, Gilmour and Mason continued the band name, later rejoining with Wright.

The origins of the band trace back to architecture students in London. Roger Waters and Nick Mason met in September 1962 while studying at the London Polytechnic.

They first played in a group called Sigma 6. Richard Wright joined that group later in 1962. The band went through many names, including the Tea Set and the Meggadeaths. They eventually rebranded as the Pink Floyd Sound in late 1965. The name "Pink Floyd" came from two blues musicians: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. This rebranding happened when they realized another band called the Tea Set was playing at one of their gigs.

Pink Floyd achieved massive commercial success and critical recognition.

Their album "The Dark Side of the Moon" was released in 1973. "The Wall," released in 1979, was also a major success and inspired a musical film. This film won two BAFTAs. The band has had many hits on the US Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart. Four of their albums topped the US charts. Both "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. They were also inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

There are many notable examples of their artistic impact.

Their music often bridged the gap between rock and other art forms. In 2008, they received the Polar Music Prize. This award recognized their contribution to the fusion of art and music in popular culture. Even after many years, they remained active. In 2005, the members reunited for the Live 8 global awareness event.

In 2014, they released "The Endless River," which used unreleased material from previous sessions.

The band's legacy connects to broader social and cultural movements. Their music has been used to express various ideas and emotions. For instance, in 2022, they released the song "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" as a protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This shows how their musical platform can reach into global political events. Their ability to combine high-concept art with popular music remains a significant part of music history. They proved that rock music could be both a commercial success and a serious art form.
