It was released on September 24, 1991, by DGC Records. This was the first album to feature drummer Dave Grohl. The music is very diverse and shows many different feelings. Some songs are dark, funny, or even disturbing. The album helped bring grunge and alternative rock to a huge audience. It even changed how people thought about rock music at that time.

The band worked hard to create a specific sound. They used a method called shifting dynamics. This means they moved from quiet verses to very loud choruses. Kurt Cobain wrote most of the songs using simple chords. He wanted to mix catchy pop tunes with heavy guitar sounds. The band recorded at Sound City Studios and Smart Studios. They worked eight to ten hours every day during the sessions. Even though they had a big budget, Cobain liked using inexpensive guitars.

Nirvana began planning this album in early 1990. They first thought about calling it Sheep. They worked with a producer named Butch Vig. The band had a drummer named Chad Channing before Dave Grohl joined. Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic saw Grohl play with a band called Scream. After that, Grohl joined Nirvana and everything seemed to fall into place. The band eventually signed with DGC Records after using their recordings as a demo. This helped them move from a smaller label to a major one.

Nevermind was an unexpected and massive success. On January 11, 1992, it hit number one on the US Billboard 200. It even replaced Michael Jackson's album, Dangerous, at the top spot. The song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a huge hit on MTV. It later went into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. In 2024, it was certified 13 times platinum by the RIAA.
