Many people call it "The Black Album" because of its dark cover. The cover shows the band's logo and a coiled snake. This snake comes from a flag with the motto "Don't Tread on Me." This album was a big change for the band. Their older music was called thrash metal, which is very fast. This new record had a slower and heavier sound. It was much more simple than their previous work.

Making the music was a very long task. The band worked for eight months at One on One Recording Studios.

They worked with a producer named Bob Rock. Rock wanted the band to play together as one unit. He also suggested using new sounds like cellos or an orchestra. This was not common for heavy metal bands at that time. The band recorded many takes of each song to get it right. They would listen to 20 or 30 takes to find the best parts.

Writing the songs was a group effort. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich wrote most of the music.

They often worked together at Lars's house in Berkeley, California. Other members like Kirk Hammett and Jason Newsted also had ideas. For example, Newsted wrote the main part of "My Friend of Misery." The lyrics were more personal than their old songs. Hetfield wrote about things like nightmares in "Enter Sandman." He also wrote a love song called "Nothing Else Matters."

Recording was often a hard job for everyone. The band and Bob Rock had many arguments during the sessions.

The work was so stressful that Rock briefly felt he could not work with them again. At the same time, some band members were going through difficult divorces. They tried to turn those hard feelings into positive music. Even with these struggles, the album became a massive success. It reached number one in ten different countries.

This album is one of the best-selling records in history.

Many people still listen to its famous songs today.
