Back in Black is a famous rock album by the Australian band AC/DC.

It was released on 25 July 1980. This album was very important because it was the first one to feature Brian Johnson as the lead singer. The band had faced a very sad time before this. Their previous singer, Bon Scott, had died in London in February 1980. The group almost decided to stop making music forever. However, friends and family helped them decide to carry on. They found Brian Johnson, who used to sing for a group called Geordie.

The band worked very hard to make the music. They spent seven weeks recording in the Bahamas from April to May 1980. They worked with a producer named Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The recording place was called Compass Point Studios in Nassau.

It was not a typical studio for them. The musicians stayed in small concrete rooms with a bed and a chair. They even had to use fishing spears for safety at night. The weather in the Bahamas was often stormy during this time. These tropical storms caused the electricity to go out. One song, "Hells Bells," even mentions the thunder and rain from these storms.

Making the album involved many unique steps. The band wanted a real bell sound for one of their songs. Their manager, Ian Jeffery, found a foundry to make a special bell. They recorded this perfectly tuned bell using Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio. For the guitar sounds, Angus Young used a special wireless device. This device was called the Schaffer–Vega diversity system. It helped give his guitar a strong signal. After they finished recording, the band went to New York City. They mixed the songs at Electric Lady Studios.

Back in Black became a huge success all around the world. It has sold about 50 million copies in total. This makes it the second-best-selling album in music history. In the United States, it is the third-best-selling album. On 21 August 2024, it was certified 27 times Platinum by the RIAA. This means it sold 27 million copies in America alone. The album reached number one on the charts in the United Kingdom and Australia. It also stayed in the top ten in America for many months.

The album is still remembered by many people today. The cover of the album is completely black. This was a sign of mourning for Bon Scott. It was a way for the band to show respect for their friend. Many music experts call the album a masterpiece of rock music. It helped AC/DC become one of the most popular bands in the early 1980s. Even though it was made during a difficult time, the music was very powerful. It showed how the band could turn sadness into something great. People still listen to these songs many years later.
