Master of Puppets is a famous heavy metal album by the band Metallica. It was released on March 3, 1986, by Elektra Records. This record is very important to the history of thrash metal. Many people believe it is one of the greatest metal albums ever made. It helped make the American thrash metal scene very strong. The album was so successful that it was certified 8 times platinum in the United States.

The band worked hard to make this music sound perfect. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich wrote most of the songs. They started by playing guitar riffs in a garage in El Cerrito, California. They would change the riffs until they sounded like a real song. Then, they chose a topic and wrote lyrics to match. The band recorded the music in Copenhagen, Denmark, at Sweet Silence Studios. They worked with a producer named Flemming Rasmussen from September to December in 1985. They wanted to avoid the easy sounds of other rock music from that time.

This album holds a very sad place in the band's history. It was the last album to feature their bassist, Cliff Burton. While the band was touring to support the album, a terrible accident happened. On September 27, 1986, the band's tour bus crashed in Dörarp, Sweden. Sadly, Cliff Burton died in the accident. Because of this, the band had to cancel their tour in Europe. They returned home to find a new person to play the bass.

The music on the album tells many deep and serious stories. The songs look at themes like power and how it can be used poorly. For example, "Disposable Heroes" is an anti-war song about a soldier. The song "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" was inspired by a famous book. Some songs use very fast rhythms and heavy guitar sounds. The song "The Thing That Should Not Be" was inspired by horror stories. The album cover also tells a story through art. It shows white crosses in a field being moved by strings.

Many people still listen to this album today because it is so special. In 2015, the Library of Congress chose it for the National Recording Registry. This means the album is considered very important for history and culture. It was also released again as a special box set in 2017. The music is known for being very complex and skilled. Even many years later, it is still a major part of metal music. It shows how a band can work together to create something huge.
