Tracy’s journey as a musician started very early in her life. Her mother bought her a ukulele when she was only three. By the age of eight, she was already writing songs. She often played the guitar to make her music. While she was a student at Tufts University, she busked. This means she played music in public places for people. She even recorded songs at the college radio station. These early steps helped her find her unique voice.

Her big break happened in the late 1980s. A student named Brian Koppelman heard her playing music. He showed a demo tape to his father, Charles Koppelman. This led to Tracy signing with Elektra Records in 1987. Her first album, also called Tracy Chapman, became a huge success. A major moment was her performance at a huge concert in London. She stepped in at the last minute for Stevie Wonder. This performance helped her song "Fast Car" become a massive hit.

Tracy has released many different albums over the years.

Her second album was named Crossroads in 1989. In 1995, she released New Beginning, which sold over five million copies. That album had the hit song "Give Me One Reason." This song won her a Grammy for Best Rock Song. She continued to release music like Telling Stories and Our Bright Future. Each album showed a new part of her musical skill.

Tracy also uses her fame to stand up for others. She is very interested in human rights and helping people. She has performed at many charity events to raise money. In 2023, she made history in the country music world. A singer named Luke Combs covered her song "Fast Car." It became a number one hit on the country charts. This made her the first Black woman to win a CMA Award for Song of the Year. She also received a special honor from South Africa for her work.
