He grew up in a home filled with different sounds. His mother played the piano and the cello. He began playing the guitar when he was only five years old. By age thirteen, he owned his first electric guitar. He studied music theory and loved many different styles. He enjoyed jazz, rock, and even the devotional music of Pakistan called Qawwali. These various sounds helped shape his own musical style.

Buckley's journey to fame involved many steps and hard work. He spent years playing guitar in different bands in Los Angeles. He played styles ranging from reggae to heavy metal. In 1990, he moved to New York City to find more work. He spent much of his time performing at a café called Sin-é. He played many different kinds of songs there. He used a Fender Telecaster guitar to play for his audiences. These small shows helped him learn how to perform well on stage.

Music was part of his family history from the very start. His father was a singer-songwriter named Tim Buckley. Jeff and his father only met one time when Jeff was eight. After his father passed away in 1975, Jeff chose to use his father's name. In 1991, Jeff performed at a tribute concert for his father in Brooklyn. He sang songs like "Once I Was" to pay his respects. This performance was a big step in his professional music career.
