Released on September 24, 1991, by DGC Records, it served as the band's major label debut. This album was the first release to feature drummer Dave Grohl. It is considered a cornerstone of the grunge genre. The album is famous for its musical diversity and emotional range. It captures feelings that are dark, humorous, and sometimes disturbing.

The creation of the album involved a specific technical and creative process. The band worked with producer Butch Vig to achieve a polished, radio-friendly sound. They recorded at Sound City Studios in California and Smart Studios in Wisconsin. During the sessions, the band worked eight to ten hours every day. Kurt Cobain, the primary songwriter, often finished lyrics just minutes before recording. He used a technique called double-tracking for his vocals. This means he recorded the same vocal part twice to add depth.

Nirvana utilized a musical approach known as shifting dynamics. This involves moving from quiet, melodic verses to very loud, heavy choruses. Grohl noted that the band practiced these extreme shifts during jam sessions. Cobain constructed his songs using power chords and pop hooks. He wanted to blend melodic elements with dissonant guitar riffs. This created a sound that combined the influence of pop with heavy rock. The album includes various styles, from acoustic ballads like "Polly" to punk-influenced tracks like "Territorial Pissings."

The history of the album began with early sessions in 1990. At first, the band tentatively planned to call the project "Sheep." They initially recorded some songs at Smart Studios with drummer Chad Channing. After Channing left, Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic recruited Dave Grohl. They were impressed by Grohl after seeing him play with the band Scream. Once Grohl joined, the band signed with DGC Records. They used their earlier recordings as a demo tape to secure this major label deal.

Nevermind achieved massive commercial and critical significance. On January 11, 1992, it reached number one on the US Billboard 200. It replaced Michael Jackson's album, Dangerous, at the top position. The album was selling approximately 300,000 copies every week at its peak. The lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was eventually inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

Several notable details highlight the album's unique production. Cobain preferred inexpensive, Japanese-made Fender guitars for their design. He often used a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal to define his sound. During the mixing stage, the band hired Andy Wallace to oversee the final sound. Wallace's mixes specifically altered the drum and guitar textures. There was also a famous error regarding a hidden track. The song "Endless, Nameless" was accidentally left off the first 20,000 copies. Cobain had to call the mastering engineer to fix the mistake.

The album's impact connects to broader cultural shifts in music. It brought grunge and alternative rock into the mainstream. This movement helped accelerate the decline of hair metal. Some observers compared its influence to the 1960s British Invasion. It also sparked a resurgence of interest in punk culture among Generation X. In 2004, the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry. They recognized it for being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. It remains a highly ranked work on many "greatest albums" lists.
