OK Computer is the third studio album by the English rock band Radiohead.

Released on 21 May 1997, it is a landmark in alternative rock music. The album is known for its dense, layered sounds and abstract lyrics. These lyrics explore a dystopian world filled with consumerism and technological anxiety. They also touch on themes of social alienation, political corruption, and globalization. Many critics believe the album showed a prescient insight into 21st-century life. It signaled a major shift in British rock away from the Britpop era.

The band used many unconventional production techniques to create this specific atmosphere. They avoided the guitar-centered, introspective style found on their previous album, The Bends. Instead, they embraced an eclectic range of musical influences. They used instruments like the Mellotron, an early electromechanical keyboard, and the glockenspiel. Much of the album was recorded live to capture a natural feeling. The band often avoided audio separation, which means they did not overdub instruments separately. This allowed the musicians to play together in real time. They even used a plate reverberator to create unique echoing effects.

Radiohead's recording process involved several different locations and stages. They began by recording demos at Chipping Norton Recording Studios in Oxfordshire. They then moved to a converted shed called Canned Applause near Didcot. However, the band found this location unsatisfactory due to poor facilities. They eventually moved to St Catherine's Court, a historic mansion in Bath.

This setting changed their entire approach to making music. The band utilized the natural acoustics of the large house. For example, they recorded vocals on a stone staircase for "Exit Music (For a Film)." They also recorded the song "Let Down" in a ballroom at 3 am. Finally, they recorded string parts at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London.

The band worked closely with producer Nigel Godrich during this period. Godrich had previously engineered The Bends and worked on several B-sides. The band's singer, Thom Yorke, noted that the song "Lucky" helped shape the new sound. Yorke described it as the "first mark on the wall" for the record. Godrich eventually became a co-producer for the album. He acted as both a collaborator and a managerial outsider. Because of his vital role, he is often called the "sixth member" of the band. The band also had a £100,000 budget for their recording equipment.

Musicology enthusiasts note the diverse influences that shaped the album's sound. Yorke cited the avant-garde jazz fusion of Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" as a starting point. He also mentioned influences from Elvis Costello, R.E.M., and PJ Harvey. The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" was another key inspiration. The band also drew from the film composer Ennio Morricone and the krautrock band Can. These influences helped create a sound that felt both shocking and atmospheric. The goal was to build a complex sound that could feel like it was falling apart.

Despite initial doubts from their label, EMI, the album was a massive success. The label originally thought the music was uncommercial and difficult to market. However, OK Computer reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. It also debuted at number 21 on the US Billboard 200. This was Radiohead's highest entry on the US charts at that time. The album was certified five times platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US. It has sold at least 7.8 million copies worldwide. The singles "Paranoid Android," "Karma Police," "Lucky," and "No Surprises" were all highly successful.

The cultural impact of OK Computer is reflected in many prestigious honors. It won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1998. It was also nominated for Album of the Year at the same ceremony. In 2014, the US Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry. This designation is given to recordings that are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. The album's legacy continues through various releases. In 2017, a remastered version called OKNOTOK 1997 2017 was issued. In 2019, the band released "MiniDiscs [Hacked]" following an internet leak. These releases contain hours of additional material from that era.
