The band wanted to try a new sound. They did not want to make the same music as before. They used many layers of sound to make it feel thick.

The songs talk about modern life. They look at things like new technology and how people act in big cities.

The band recorded most of the music in a large, old house. This house was called St Catherine's Court.

They used the different rooms to get special sounds. For one song, they recorded voices on a stone staircase. This made the sound ring out naturally. Most of the album was recorded while the band played live together. This helped the music feel real. They used instruments like the glockenspiel, which is a set of metal bells. The album was a huge success. It sold millions of copies around the world. Many people call it one of the best albums of all time. It even won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
