U2 is a famous rock band from Ireland.

They are known for making music that feels big and powerful. This style is often called anthemic. The band is made of four members. Bono sings the lead vocals. The Edge plays lead guitar and keyboards. Adam Clayton plays the bass guitar. Larry Mullen Jr. plays the drums and percussion. They are one of the best-selling music artists in the world. They have sold between 150 and 170 million records.

Making their music involves many different sounds and tools. The Edge uses a special guitar effect called a delay unit. This makes his guitar sounds chime and ring out. In the studio, they sometimes use unusual ways to record. For their first album, they recorded drum sounds in a stairwell. They even used sounds from smashed bottles and spinning bicycle wheels. Their music has changed over many years. Some albums use electronic dance music sounds. Other albums have a more abstract or ambient feel.

The band started in Dublin in 1976. The members were teenagers at Mount Temple Comprehensive School. Larry Mullen Jr. posted a note at his school to find musicians. At first, they were not very skilled at music. They even called themselves "Feedback" for a short time. Later, they were called "The Hype." In March 1978, they chose the name U2. They won a talent contest in Limerick in 1978. This win helped them find a manager named Paul McGuinness.
