U2 is an influential Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976.

The group consists of four members: Bono on lead vocals, the Edge on lead guitar and keyboards, Adam Clayton on bass guitar, and Larry Mullen Jr. on drums and percussion. They are recognized globally for an anthemic musical style. This sound is built on Bono's expressive singing and the Edge's chiming, effects-based guitar work. Throughout their career, the band has explored diverse musical genres. Their lyrics often combine personal reflections with spiritual and sociopolitical themes.

The creation of U2's sound involves specific technical methods and artistic collaborations. The Edge uses a delay effect unit, specifically the Electro-Harmonix Memory Man, to create his signature ringing guitar tones. In the studio, the band has experimented with unconventional recording techniques. For their debut album, *Boy*, producer Steve Lillywhite recorded drums in a stairwell. The production also included sounds from smashed bottles and cutlery hitting a spinning bicycle wheel. Later, the band collaborated with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. This partnership resulted in a more abstract and ambient sound for their fourth album, *The Unforgettable Fire*.

U2's musical journey can be divided into several distinct stylistic eras. Their early years were rooted in post-punk music. In the 1990s, they underwent a major reinvention influenced by alternative, industrial, and electronic dance music. This era featured the multimedia Zoo TV Tour and a more ironic, flippant image. Following this experimentation, the band returned to a more conventional, mainstream sound. This transition occurred with albums like *All That You Can't Leave Behind* in 2000.

The history of the band began at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. In 1976, 14-year-old Larry Mullen Jr. posted a notice to find musicians. The group initially lacked high musical proficiency. They first performed under the name "Feedback" before changing it to "The Hype." In March 1978, they selected the name "U2" from six suggestions.

A major milestone occurred in March 1978 when they won the "Pop Group '78" talent contest in Limerick. This victory helped them secure a manager, Paul McGuinness, and eventually a contract with Island Records.

The commercial significance of U2 is reflected in massive sales and touring figures. They are one of the world's best-selling music artists, with estimated sales of 150 to 170 million records. Their 1987 album, *The Joshua Tree*, was a massive success, selling 25 million copies. This album produced their only US number-one singles, "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

In terms of live performance, the U2 360° Tour (2009–2011) set records for the highest-grossing and most-attended tour.

From 1980 to 2022, they were the second-highest-grossing live artist, earning US$2.13 billion.

U2 has received numerous prestigious accolades for their work. They have won 22 Grammy Awards, eight Brit Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. The band was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. *Rolling Stone* ranked them at number 22 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time." Even in recent years, they continue to innovate, such as their residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Beyond the music industry, the band is deeply connected to global social justice efforts. They use their platform to campaign for human rights through various organizations. They have worked with Amnesty International and the ONE Campaign. They also support groups like War Child, Product Red, and Music Rising. Their career demonstrates how musical influence can extend into humanitarian activism.
