a-ha is a highly successful Norwegian synth-pop band.

Formed in Oslo in 1982, the group consists of three members. Morten Harket serves as the lead vocalist. Paul Waaktaar-Savoy plays the guitar and provides vocals. Magne Furuholmen plays keyboards and also contributes guitar and vocals. The band is known for its electronic sounds and melodic pop music. They have achieved massive global popularity through several decades of work. To date, they have sold more than 100 million units of albums and singles combined.

The creation of the band's identity involved several specific steps. The trio originally moved from Norway to London to build a music career. They initially searched for a name using Norwegian words that English speakers could pronounce. Eventually, Morten Harket found a song titled "A-ha" in Waaktaar-Savoy's songbook. They adopted this title for the band. They also established a management structure through TJ Management. This included producer John Ratcliff for technical matters and Terry Slater for international business.

One of the most important parts of their success was their use of visual art. Their breakout hit, "Take On Me," utilized a unique video technique called rotoscoping. In rotoscoping, artists draw over or color individual frames of film. This created a groundbreaking combination of pencil-sketch animation and live-action footage.

The video became an enduring icon of the 1980s. It won six MTV Video Awards in 1986. This included awards for Best Concept Video and Best Direction. Their single-year award total was higher than that of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" at the time.

The band's career can be divided into several distinct musical eras. Their first era was defined by the 1985 album, *Hunting High and Low*. This album reached number one in Norway and number two in the UK. Their second era, the "Golden Age," began with the 1986 album *Scoundrel Days*. This period saw a shift toward alternative rock as synth-pop style changed.

They also had a successful period in the early 1990s. This era included the album *East of the Sun, West of the Moon*. After a hiatus following 1994, they returned with several successful albums in the 2000s. They eventually reunited in 2015 to release *Cast in Steel*.

The history of a-ha is marked by massive commercial milestones. Their debut album, *Hunting High and Low*, sold 11 million copies worldwide. It earned triple platinum status in the UK and platinum status in the US and Germany.

In 1986, the band received a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist. Their 1988 album, *Stay on These Roads*, also reached number two on the British charts. This album included the song "The Living Daylights," which they wrote for a James Bond film. These numbers show the immense scale of their international influence.

A surprising fact in their history involves a record-breaking concert in Brazil. In January 1991, a-ha performed at the Rock in Rio II festival. They drew an audience of 198,000 people at Maracanã Stadium.

This achievement earned them a place in the Guinness World Records for the biggest rock concert attendance. Interestingly, the band felt a sense of disappointment despite this success. They felt the international media ignored their massive achievement at the festival. This moment remains a significant part of their professional journey.

a-ha connects to many broader themes in music and culture. Their early sound was inspired by the UK's synth-pop scene and acts like Soft Cell and OMD. Their work also shows the intersection of music and film through their James Bond contribution.

Economically, the band has been a major force in the industry. In 2010 alone, they earned an estimated 500 million Norwegian kroner from tours and merchandise. This placed them among the 40 to 50 highest-grossing bands in the world. Their career spans eleven studio albums and continues to be studied in pop music history.
