ABBA is a legendary Swedish pop group that redefined global music success.

Formed in Stockholm in 1972, the group consisted of four distinct musicians: Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. They are recognized as the best-selling Swedish band of all time. They also hold the title of the best-selling band from continental Europe. ABBA was the first group from a non-English-speaking nation to achieve consistent chart success in English-speaking markets. These markets included the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and South Africa.

The formation of the group was a gradual process of musical collaboration.

Before joining together, the members had successful individual careers. Agnetha Fältskog was a singer-songwriter who achieved a number-one single in Sweden at age 18. Björn Ulvaeus fronted the folk-skiffle group Hootenanny Singers. Benny Andersson played keyboards for the pop-rock group Hep Stars, which was often called "the Swedish Beatles." Anni-Frid Lyngstad worked in jazz-orientated cabaret and won a national talent competition in 1967. The four artists began collaborating more frequently in 1971, often providing backing vocals for one another's solo recordings.

ABBA's transition from individual artists to a unified group involved several key stages.

An early attempt at a group act was a cabaret show called "Festfolket," or "Party People," launched in 1970. While the show received mostly negative reviews, it featured the song "Hej, gamle man," which became the quartet's first hit. Their official international breakthrough occurred in 1974. They entered and won the Eurovision Song Contest with their song "Waterloo." This victory propelled them into global stardom. In 2005, "Waterloo" was even named the best song in the history of the Eurovision competition.

The group's history is deeply connected to the personal lives of its members.

During their most successful years, the group comprised two married couples: Fältskog and Ulvaeus, and Lyngstad and Andersson. As their global fame grew, these personal relationships faced significant strain. Both marriages eventually dissolved. This shift in their personal lives directly influenced their creative output. Their later musical compositions moved away from bright pop toward darker, more introspective lyrics.

ABBA's commercial impact is measured by staggering industry figures.

The group has sold in excess of 400 million records worldwide. In 2004, they were honored for reaching 360 million sales between 1974 and 2004. By 2010, they received an award for reaching 375 million records sold. In the United Kingdom, they are the third best-selling singles artist, with 11.3 million singles sold as of 2012. Their compilation album, "Abba Gold: Greatest Hits," is a massive success. It has been certified platinum over 128 times across more than 28 countries and territories. This album also holds a record for staying in the UK top 100 chart for 1,242 weeks.

Beyond recorded music, ABBA's legacy continues through various media adaptations.

Their music served as the foundation for the stage musical Mamma Mia!, which debuted in 1999. This production toured globally and became one of the longest-running shows on both Broadway and the West End. A film adaptation was released in 2008 and became the highest-grossing film in the United Kingdom that year. A sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, followed in 2018. These projects have ensured that the group's melodies remain a part of popular culture.

In recent years, the group has embraced cutting-edge technology to reach new audiences.

After a long hiatus following their 1982 disbandment, the group reunited in 2016 to work on a digital avatar concert tour. They released their first new album in 40 years, titled Voyage, on November 5, 2021. This led to the creation of ABBA Voyage, a concert residency in London. This residency features the members as virtual avatars performing in a purpose-built arena. These concerts have seen over 3 million attendees as of 2025. The residency is estimated to have contributed more than £2 billion to the UK economy.
