Vikingarna (band)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Vikingarna was a highly successful Swedish dansband formed in Karlstad in 1958. A dansband is a specific type of schlager music designed for dancing in social halls. The group became one of the best-selling musical acts in all of Scandinavia. Many music fans consider them the greatest dansband to ever exist. By the time they officially disbanded in 2004, they had sold more than 11 million records. Their music served as a cultural standard for the dansband sound across the region.

The band followed a very disciplined and repetitive professional cycle to maintain their success. Between 1979 and 1992, they released exactly one album every single year. They would record and mix a new album during the winter months. Once the winter ended, they released the album during the spring. This was followed by a rigorous six-month tour to support the new music. While they were traveling on tour, the members would write new material. This cycle ensured they always had a new product ready for the next winter.

The group's early history involved several name changes and shifts in musical style. In 1958, they formed as a skiffle band named Ji-Coo and the Vikings. The original lineup included instruments like the saxophone, trumpet, and keyboards. After some internal struggles in 1961, the group was renamed The Vikings. By the mid-1960s, they transitioned into the dansband style. A famous mistake occurred when a secretary translated their name to "Vikingarna." The band decided to keep this new Swedish name to avoid losing a recording contract.

Membership in the band changed frequently during their long career. By 1973, the group had gone through a total of twenty-four different members. One major turning point occurred when lead singer Stefan Borsch left to pursue a solo career. He was replaced by Christer Sjögren, a skilled vocalist who remained with the band for the rest of its existence. Other notable members included longtime guitarist Jörgen Arnemar and drummer Anders Erixon. Erixon was described by Sjögren as the core of the band who kept everyone together.

Vikingarna achieved significant commercial milestones in various international markets. They achieved their first major hit in 1974 with the song "På världens tak." Their second major hit, "Du gav bara löften," became their first number one single. In 1975, they earned a gold record for the album Kramgoa Låtar 1 in Sweden. They also earned a silver record in Norway during that same year. The band even expanded into the Soviet Union, where they sold 40,000 copies of an album. They were the first Scandinavian act to perform in that country.

The band also found success by adapting to different languages and cultures. In the year 2000, they began recording songs in German to reach new audiences. During this period, they used the name "Vikinger," which is the German translation of Vikingarna. This move made them very popular in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. They even made several appearances on German television. This international expansion showed how a regional musical style could cross borders through language adaptation.

Despite their massive success, the band faced periods of deep sadness and loss. In 1997, drummer Anders Erixon died suddenly at the age of 53. This loss nearly caused the band to break up. Later, guitarist Lasse Westmann died from pneumonia in early 2004. These losses occurred near the end of the band's active years. Their final farewell concert took place in Arvika on July 3, 2004. More than 7,000 people attended the event, which set a record for the venue. The group's legacy remains tied to their massive record sales and their influence on Scandinavian pop culture.
