This type of music is made for people to dance to in halls. Many people in Scandinavia think they are the greatest dansband ever. By the time they stopped in 2004, they had sold over 11 million records. This is a very large number of sales. Their music brought people together through dance and song. They are a huge part of Swedish music history.

The band had a very steady way of working to stay successful. They would record and mix a new album during the winter months. Then, they would release that album during the spring. After the release, they went on a six-month tour to play for fans. While they were touring, the members would write new songs for the next album. They followed this same pattern from 1979 until 1992. This helped them release one new album every single year.

The group first started in 1958 in Karlstad, Sweden. At first, they were called Ji-Coo and the Vikings. The early members played instruments like the saxophone, trumpet, and guitar. In 1961, they recorded an EP called Viking Boogie. Later, the band changed its name to The Vikings. A mistake by a secretary actually changed the name to Vikingarna. They kept this new name because they did not want to lose a big chance. This name became famous all over Scandinavia.

Many different people joined the band over the years. By 1973, the group had already had twenty-four different members. Some members, like singer Christer Sjögren, stayed for a very long time. Sjögren joined after lead singer Stefan Borsch left to work alone. The band also found success in other places like the Soviet Union. They sold 40,000 copies of an album there. They even became popular in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. In those countries, they sometimes used the name Vikinger.

Learning about Vikingarna is like learning about how a big team works. Just like a sports team, members sometimes leave or join. The band faced hard times when members like drummer Anders Erixon passed away. They also lost guitarist Lasse Westmann before their final tour. Even with these sad moments, they kept playing for their fans. Their last big concert was in Arvika in July 2004. More than 7,000 people came to watch them play one last time.
