Stenmark focused on two technical types of racing. These races are called slalom and giant slalom. He did not like the very fast downhill events. He preferred to master the tricky details of his technique. His trainer, Hermann Nogler, watched him closely. He said Stenmark always looked for a smoother and faster way through the gates. This focus helped him become a master of his craft. He used his skill to find the best path down the mountain.

His career was full of amazing wins and records. He won 86 World Cup races during his time competing. This included 46 giant slaloms and 40 slaloms. He held the record for most wins for over 30 years. Only Mikaela Shiffrin has since passed his total number of wins. In 1979, he set a huge record for a win margin. He won by 4.06 seconds in a race at Jasna. This remains the biggest win margin in a World Cup race.

Stenmark won many important medals and titles. He won three straight World Cup titles from 1976 to 1978. He also won gold medals at the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. In 1978, he won world titles in both slalom and giant slalom. He earned the Holmenkollen medal in 1979 for his great skill. He also won the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal twice. He was the only man to win that honor twice alongside tennis player Björn Borg.
