He was a professional player who reached the world No. 1 ranking. He held this top spot for 270 weeks. People often call him the "Father of Modern Tennis." This is because he changed how the game is played. He used a very strong style of play. He liked to hit the ball hard from the back of the court. This style is known as aggressive baseline power tennis.

Lendl's game relied on a special kind of shot. He used a powerful move called the "inside-out forehand." This shot involves hitting the ball with a lot of topspin. Topspin is when the ball spins forward quickly through the air. This makes the ball bounce hard and stay in the court. He used this to overpower his opponents from the baseline. Many players today still use this same way of playing. It changed tennis from a game of finesse to a game of power.

Lendl grew up in a family that loved tennis. He was born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. His father, Jiří, was a lawyer and a top tennis player. His mother, Olga, was also a very high-ranked female player. Lendl started playing when he was only three years old. At first, he just used a paddle to hit a ball against a wall. He practiced a lot with his father. By the time he was 14, he could even beat his mother in a match.

His professional career was full of amazing wins and records. Lendl won 94 career singles titles during his time playing. He won eight major titles, which are the biggest trophies in tennis. These included three French Open wins and three US Open wins. He also won two Australian Open titles. Lendl was very consistent and rarely lost. In five different years, he won over 90% of all his matches. He beat famous rivals like Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe many times.

After he finished playing professional tennis, Lendl became a coach. He used his great knowledge to help other players succeed. One of his most famous students was Andy Murray.
