She was known for her calm and steady way of playing. Because she stayed so cool under pressure, people called her the "Ice Maiden." Evert spent many years at the very top of the sport. She held the world number one ranking for 260 weeks. This is the fourth-most weeks of any player ever. She also finished each year as the top player seven different times. Her skill helped her win 157 singles titles during her career.

Winning a tennis match takes great focus and many steps. Evert had to play through many different types of courts. Some courts are made of grass, while others are hard or made of clay.

She was especially amazing on clay courts, which are made of crushed stone. On these courts, she won 94.55% of her matches. This remains a record for the WTA Tour. She once won 125 matches in a row on clay. That is a huge streak that no one has beaten yet. She even won 189 matches on clay between 1973 and 1981.

Evert's journey began in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She was born in 1954 to Colette and Jimmy Evert. Her father was a professional tennis coach. He had even won a title at the Canadian Championships in 1947. Chris started taking tennis lessons from him when she was only five years old. By 1969, she was already the number one under-14 girl in the United States. She played her first big senior tournament that same year. She reached the semifinals in her hometown of Fort Lauderdale.

Her professional career was full of big numbers and famous names. Evert won 18 major titles, which are the most important tournaments.

They played many intense matches against each other. Evert also won three major doubles titles with partners like Navratilova and Olga Morozova. She was a leader in the sport too. She served as the president of the Women's Tennis Association for eleven years.

Today, many people still follow the path Evert helped build. After she retired from professional play in 1989, she stayed close to the game. She became a tennis coach to help others learn. Now, she works as an analyst for ESPN, where she talks about tennis matches. She also has her own line of clothes for active people.
