Born in Mannheim, Germany, in 1969, she became a star very early. Her father, Peter Graf, first taught her to swing a wooden racket. She began practicing on a court when she was only four years old. By age five, she was already playing in her first tournament. She grew up to be a dominant force in women's tennis. Many experts, like Billie Jean King, call her the greatest ever.

Steffi had a very special way of playing the game. She was known for her amazing footwork on the court. She also had a very powerful forehand drive, which is a strong shot hit from one side of the body. Her style was very aggressive and she played mostly from the baseline. This means she stayed near the back of the court to hit the ball. This way of playing helped change how people play tennis today. She could play well on any surface, like grass or clay.

She won the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. She also won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul. Her 1988 Grand Slam was unique because it happened on three different surfaces. This included grass, clay, and hard courts.
