Maria had a very bold and aggressive way of playing. She used a hard serve to start her points. She was also a strong volleyer, which means she played well near the net. She did not use a formal coach to help her. Instead, she practiced with men to improve her speed on the court. She also wore special tennis dresses designed by Ted Tinling. Her style was so unique that people called it "balletic and flamboyant."
