She is widely considered one of the most dominant athletes in the history of the sport. Graf achieved the world No. 1 ranking in women's singles for a record 377 weeks. She also finished a calendar year as the No. 1 player eight different times. Throughout her career, she captured 107 singles titles on the WTA Tour. This total includes 22 major women's singles titles. This number is the third-most of all time and the second-most since the Open Era began in 1968.

Graf's playing style fundamentally changed the way modern tennis is played. She was famous for her incredible footwork and her powerful forehand drive. Her game was highly aggressive and focused on playing from the baseline. The baseline is the back line of the tennis court. By playing from this position, she influenced the style of play seen in many players today. She was also known for her versatility across all playing surfaces. This meant she could win on grass, clay, and hard courts with equal skill.

Her journey began in Mannheim, West Germany, where she was born on 14 June 1969. Her father, Peter Graf, was an aspiring tennis coach. He first introduced her to the sport by teaching her to swing a wooden racket in their living room. By age four, she was practicing on a court. By age five, she was competing in her first tournament. She quickly became a junior champion, winning the European Championships for both the 12s and 18s categories in 1982.

Graf entered the professional circuit as a teenager. At the 1983 French Open, she became the youngest player to appear in a major's main draw at age 13. Her ranking rose steadily from No. 124 in 1983 to No. 6 by 1985. During this time, she challenged the dominance of legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. She won her first WTA tournament in April 1986 at the Family Circle Cup. In that final, she defeated Evert, a victory that signaled her arrival as a top player.

The year 1988 stands as the most significant period of her career. During this single calendar year, Graf achieved the "Golden Slam." This is a feat where a player wins all four major titles and the Olympic gold medal. She won the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. She then won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul.

Her 1988 Grand Slam was unique because it was completed on three different surfaces. This included grass, clay, and hard courts. No other player has achieved a Grand Slam across those three specific surfaces.

Graf's dominance is highlighted by several historic statistical milestones. She is the only player, male or female, to win each major singles tournament at least four times. This achievement is known as a quadruple career Grand Slam. In her 1988 French Open final, she won in just 34 minutes. This remains the shortest and most one-sided Grand Slam final in the Open Era. She also holds a record for being the first player to win 28 Grand Slam singles matches in one year.

Even with great success, Graf faced significant challenges during her career. She struggled with various injuries in 1997 and 1998. She also faced new, talented rivals like Monica Seles. Despite these hurdles, she won her 22nd and final major title at the French Open in 1999. She retired later that year at age 30 while ranked as the world No. 3.
