She was a top player during the 1970s and early 1980s. She even reached the number one spot in the world. This ranking happened in 1976, but a computer error meant it was not reported then. People only found out about her top rank in 2007. She won 86 singles titles during her career. She also won 46 doubles titles. These wins show how much skill she had on the court.

Her journey to the top started in a small place called Barellan. She was born into a Wiradjuri family, which is an Aboriginal group. Her father, Ken, was a sheep shearer. Her mother, Melinda, stayed at home to care for the family. As a child, Evonne watched tennis through a fence. A man named Bill Kurtzman saw her and asked her to play. Later, a teacher named Vic Edwards saw her talent too. He helped her move to Sydney to train at a high school.

Evonne reached many big goals in tennis tournaments. In 1971, she won the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year. This is called a Channel Slam. She was only the second woman to do this in the Open Era. She is also the only woman to beat three legends in a grand slam final. These legends were Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert. Winning against such great players is a very hard job. She showed the world how strong she could be.

She also showed that being a mother did not stop her success. In 1980, she won the Wimbledon title again. This was special because she was a mother at the time. She was the first mother to win that title in 66 years. To win that year, she beat four top ten players. This included Hana Mandlíková and Tracy Austin. She even played in tournaments while she was pregnant. This shows her great spirit and dedication to the game.

She leads the Goolagong National Development Camp for Indigenous boys and girls. This camp helps young people stay in school. Her life is an amazing story of talent and hard work.
