He was born in Czechoslovakia. His mother and father both played tennis. He started playing when he was only three years old. He used a paddle to hit a ball against a wall.

Lendl changed how people play tennis. He hit the ball very hard from the back of the court. This style is called baseline power tennis. He used a strong shot called a topspin forehand. This shot makes the ball spin fast. People call him the "Father of Modern Tennis" because of this.

He won 94 singles titles in his career. He won eight major titles. These are some of the biggest trophies in the sport. He was the world number one for 270 weeks. Lendl also had a very high winning rate. In five different years, he won over 90% of his matches.

After he stopped playing, Lendl became a coach. He helped the player Andy Murray win three major titles. He also helped Murray reach the number one spot in the world.
