The Ramones were a pioneering American punk rock band.

They formed in 1974 in Forest Hills, Queens. The group is widely recognized for helping to establish the punk movement in the United States and abroad. While they did not achieve massive commercial success during their active years, their influence on punk culture is immense. They are celebrated for a sound that was fast, raw, and energetic. This style set them apart from the music of the era. Today, they are considered one of the most important bands in rock history.

Creating the band required significant trial and error.

The original members met in the middle-class neighborhood of Forest Hills. John Cummings and Thomas Erdelyi had played together in a high-school garage band. They eventually teamed up with Douglas Colvin and Jeff Hyman. The group struggled initially to find the right roles. For instance, Dee Dee Ramone discovered he could not sing and play bass simultaneously. This led to Joey Ramone becoming the lead singer.

Additionally, Tommy Ramone joined as the drummer after demonstrating he could perform their unique music better than others.

To create a unified identity, the members adopted pseudonyms. All members took the surname "Ramone," even though they were not biologically related. This idea was inspired by Paul McCartney. He had used the stage name Paul Ramon during his time with the Silver Beetles. This naming convention helped the band present a cohesive image to the public. Their music was defined by its brevity and speed. Most of their songs clocked in at under two minutes. This rapid-fire approach became a hallmark of the punk genre.

The band’s rise was tied to the emerging New York music scene. They became regulars at the famous Manhattan club CBGB. Their debut there occurred on August 16, 1974. Observers noted that they looked striking in black leather jackets. They did not resemble the hippies common in that era. Instead, they provided a "wall of noise" that felt completely new. This energy helped them sign with Sire Records in late 1975. They quickly became leaders of the scene known as "punk."

In 1976, the band recorded their self-titled debut album.

The production was done on an extremely low budget of approximately $6,400. Although the album only reached number 111 on the Billboard chart, critics were enthusiastic. One critic called them the best young rock 'n' roll band in the universe. Their influence soon spread internationally. A successful performance at the Roundhouse in London helped galvanize the burgeoning UK punk scene. This helped fuel musical movements in England and Los Angeles.

The Ramones maintained an incredibly active career for 22 years. They performed a total of 2,263 concerts. During their tenure, they released fourteen studio albums. While they had several lineup changes, Joey and Johnny were the only constant members. Tommy left in 1978 to work as a producer. Other musicians, such as Marky Ramone and C. J. Ramone, joined the lineup later. The band eventually played a farewell concert in Los Angeles in 1996 after touring with the Lollapalooza festival.

The legacy of the Ramones is reflected in many prestigious honors. In 2002, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Various publications have ranked them among the greatest artists ever. Spin magazine ranked them as the second-greatest band of all time, trailing only the Beatles. Their impact connects to the broader history of rock music and the development of subcultures. Even though the four original members have passed away, their musical contribution remains a foundation for many artists.
