Her musical identity is defined by an eclectic style that merges diverse genres. She integrates electronica, pop, dance, trip hop, jazz, and avant-garde music into her work. Beyond singing, she is a record producer and an actress. She is famous for her distinct vocal quality and a three-octave vocal range. Her career has spanned five decades, making her one of the most significant musicians of her era.

Björk's musical development began in Reykjavík, Iceland. At age six, she studied classical flute and piano. A pivotal moment occurred after a school recital when her teachers sent a recording of her singing to the RÚV radio station. This national broadcast led to a recording contract with the Fálkinn label. She released her first record, titled Björk, at age 11 in December 1977. During her teenage years, she explored various musical groups. These included the punk band Spit and Snot and the jazz fusion group Exodus.

In the 1980s, Björk participated in several experimental projects. She joined the gothic rock group Kukl, which was the first Icelandic band to perform at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. During this time, she also began developing her unique vocalization, which included howls and shrieks. Later, she became the lead singer of the alternative rock band the Sugarcubes. The band achieved international fame, especially after their 1988 album, Life's Too Good, sold over one million copies.

The Sugarcubes were eventually described by Rolling Stone as the largest rock band to emerge from Iceland.

After the Sugarcubes disbanded in 1992, Björk moved to London to launch her solo career. This transition led to a series of highly successful and experimental albums. Her 1993 album, Debut, blended electronic and pop sounds and earned platinum status in the United States. She followed this with Post in 1995 and Homogenic in 1997. Each project pushed musical boundaries. For example, her 2001 album Vespertine utilized glitch-influenced sounds. Her 2004 album, Medúlla, focused on a cappella arrangements.

Björk's commercial success is immense. She has sold more than 40 million records worldwide, marking her as one of the best-selling alternative artists in history. Her singles have frequently appeared on global pop charts. In the United Kingdom, she achieved 22 top 40 hits. These include top-10 singles such as "It's Oh So Quiet," "Army of Me," and "Hyperballad."
