She is recognized as one of the most successful recording artists in French history. Globally, she has sold more than 35 million records. In France, she holds the record for the most number one hit singles, with twenty-one total. Eight of these singles reached the top position consecutively. Her career is defined by her ability to evolve through various musical genres while maintaining massive commercial success.

Farmer's creative process often involves a deep partnership with others. In 1984, she met Laurent Boutonnat, a film student. They formed a long-term creative duo to write and produce her music. During this partnership, Farmer focused on writing the lyrics for her songs. Boutonnat focused on composing the music and directing her music videos. This collaboration allowed her music videos to feel like cinematic short films. For example, the video for "Libertine" was inspired by 19th-century literature.

Her musical style has moved through several distinct stages. Her early albums used synth-pop and Europop sounds. In 1995, she released the album *Anamorphosée*, which introduced rock and R&B influences. This album was recorded in the United States to capture new sounds. Later, she explored electronica with her album *Point de suture*. She also experimented with acoustic pop on the album *Avant que l'ombre...*. In 2010, she returned to her roots with the dark synth-pop style of *Bleu noir*.

Farmer's life began in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada, on September 12, 1961. Her family moved to Chaville, near Paris, when she was eight years old. After moving, she took speech classes because her school found her Québécois accent improper. At age 17, she studied acting at the Cours Florent in Paris. She chose the professional name Mylène Farmer to honor the 1930s Hollywood actress Frances Farmer. Her professional music career began in 1984 with the single "Maman a tort."

Her commercial impact is supported by massive sales figures. Her second studio album, *Ainsi soit je...*, sold 1.5 million copies in France. Her third album, *L'autre...*, became her best-selling studio work with two million copies sold. The single "Désenchantée" became her signature song and spent nine weeks at number one. Her 2001 greatest hits collection, *Les Mots*, sold over two million copies. This makes it the highest-selling compilation album by any French recording artist.

Beyond her own singing, Farmer has contributed to the wider music industry. She acted as a lyricist and image consultant for the singer Alizée. Farmer co-wrote the song "Moi... Lolita," which reached number one in several European countries. She also ventured into film acting. She starred in the film *Giorgino* in 1994 and the horror film *Ghostland* in 2018. These roles show her interest in storytelling through different media.

Farmer's work also connects to large-scale live performance and technology. Her concert tours often feature complex stage designs. For her 2006 residency at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, designer Mark Fisher created a massive set. This set included two different stages connected by a mobile bridge. The production also used a water curtain to project the singer's silhouette.
